Who does Think Brain Based work with?
TBB works with students (3rd grade through 12, collegiate, graduate school, and vocational) who are experiencing challenges with managing school-related tasks due to Executive Function/ADHD or literacy problems. For Literacy coaching, TBB targets reading fluency and reading comprehension. The student must be reading at a level that will allow effective implementation of fluency and/or comprehension strategies. What is Executive Function (EF)?
Executive function is a neuropsychological concept referring to the cognitive processes required to manage our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to achieve personal goals. The cognitive processes involved include the ability to plan and direct activities; initiate tasks and follow-through; sustain attention; monitor performance; inhibit impulses; engage in working memory tasks; and goal-directed persistence.
What is Executive Function coaching?
Executive function coaching involves teaching students ‘how to learn’ to become more effective learners. It involves developing skills and strategies for organizing, planning, prioritizing, managing time, maintaining focus, self-assessment, and studying efficiently.
What type of student might benefit from Executive Function coaching?
Executive Function coaching may assist student athletes, gifted/high achieving, STEAM program students, college-track high schoolers, vocational learners, college students, graduate students, and students diagnosed with ADHD or dyslexia (a learning disability in reading).
What areas of reading are supported through Literacy coaching?
Literacy coaching supports learners having difficulty in reading fluency or reading comprehension.
Does Think Brain Based accept insurance?
Although Think Brain Based does not accept insurance, some clients may be able to utilize their Flexible Spending Account/Health Savings Account (FSA/HSA) benefit to assist with paying for coaching services. Clients are encouraged to contact their FSA/HSA provider to determine if TBB services are an approved use of funds. If so, the client may request that TBB is added to the FSA/HSA’s approved vendor list. Some clients may also be able to utilize 529 college plan funds to pay for coaching services.
How long does the coaching process take?
Due to the individual and intentional nature of the coaching services provided, TBB recognizes that coaching may take several months, or longer, before the client has realized their goals. Each learner’s readiness for change, motivation, and neuropsychological readiness will impact the longevity of the coaching process. TBB recognizes that each learner has individual needs and differences. The goal of TBB is to help learners actualize their potential in the time needed to achieve their personal goals, without prolonging the process.
What is the difference between EF coaching and tutoring?
With tutoring services, a learner is having trouble in one or more academic areas and the tutor is teaching targeted academic skills in that area. With EF coaching, the learner is usually having trouble in several subject areas, due to their EF weaknesses. The EF coach assists students with the ‘how to of learning’, skills across the range of EF capabilities: time management, organization, planning, prioritizing, working memory, goal-directed persistence, self-management, etc.
Is coaching a substitute for professional counseling or medical treatment?
No. TBB coaching is an academic support. It is not recommended as a substitute or replacement for evaluation or professional medical treatment of any mental health disorder.
To be eligible for coaching, is an ADHD or dyslexia (learning disability in reading) diagnosis required?
No. Students and parents may choose to pursue the services of TBB without a prior diagnosis of ADHD or a reading disability.
What are the goals of Think Brain Based coaching?
A coaching plan is developed for each client. Goals are identified during the intake appointment. TBB recommends no more than two goals at a time. TBB strives to support students in the development of self-management, self-regulation, and self-determination.
How often are coaching services recommended?
TBB recommends weekly coaching for Executive Functioning concerns and at least twice weekly for literacy concerns.
Where are coaching services held?
Online coaching services are held through the Zoom platform. Clients local to the Atlanta metro area may come in for face-to-face coaching.
What is the investment/cost for coaching?
Executive function coaching starts at $30.00 per week, one 30-minute session per week. Literacy coaching (reading fluency or reading comprehension) starts at $60 per week. Literacy coaching clients are seen twice per week. Each literacy coaching session is 30-minutes.
